Just-style management briefing: Closing the loop on recycled textiles
By MJ Deschamps
With fast fashion and quick turnover key commercial ingredients of today’s garment and apparel industry, excess textile production is prompting the sector to gravitate towards more recycling and re-use of materials, to conserve energy, increase sustainability and lower raw material costs. (more…)
Hit Ballad of a Male Nurse’s Inspiration: Raymond
It’s easy to see why this new hit is up to 1.5 million views on Youtube. Beautiful song written by an aspiring male nurse who happens to be a talented songwriter.

While I’m not an RN yet, I’ve been along side my mom as she’s worked in nursing homes and the home health setting before she passed away at the young age of 39. I have recently started a cna job. As a male, people are often shocked when they find I’m pursuing the nursing field.
One day after my mother had passed away, I had been by to cut the grass of a 101 year old lady that she helped take care of. My grandmother who took over her care, needed to run to the store, asked me to feed her dinner while she left. The lady was going downhill pretty fast and hadn’t been In her right mind or speaking for weeks. All of a sudden as I’m feeding her, she grabs my hand very tightly and opens her eyes wide, and says “you’re mother would be really proud of you”. These were the only she had spoken in over 6 days. from that day, I’ve knew my calling.
I believe this song explains my journey and hopefully some of you others can relate to.

How Bikes Can Solve Our Biggest Problems
There’s tantalizing data suggesting that biking could go a long way to solving America’s obesity crisis. And much more.Americans are getting fatter every year, and weight-related diseases kill us at a rate second only to tobacco. There’s been lots of proposed solutions to that problem–rejiggering the food pyramid, advertising campaigns, soda taxes. But the simplest of all might just be bikes. Yes, bikes.

Schools plagued by nursing shortage
By Sarah Campbell
scampbell@salisburypost.com
SALISBURY — During a recent afternoon at Millbridge Elementary, school nurse Sharon Beck held a blood glucose monitor steady while second-grader Kayla Woods pricked her own finger.
The two chatted until the device beeped, an indication the results were ready.
Kayla’s blood sugar was high, so Beck asked the type-1 diabetic a few questions.
“What did you have for lunch?”
“Did you eat all of your lunch?”
“Wasn’t your blood sugar low this morning?”
It turns out Kayla ate almost every bite of her burrito lunch that day.
After Kayla returned to class, Beck called her father to give him a heads up.
During the call, she asked when the 7-year-old’s next appointment with a doctor was and suggested checking to see if her diet needed to be adjusted.
But most days Beck isn’t around to help Kayla with her blood sugar checks, leaving the school’s administrative assistants to handle the task.
Each week, Beck travels between Landis Elementary School, Millbridge Elementary and Knox Middle.
And she’s not the only one. (more…)

Eating organic – Yoga entrepreneur keeps it raw
Taylor Wells, 45, eats only raw vegan food. The younger of her five children, Phoenix, 4, and 14-month-old twins Dakota and Montana, who are still nursing, have never eaten cooked foods in their young lives.
Taylor and husband Phillipe converted to a raw vegan diet after 7-year-old Sage was born, but waited for a while before introducing a completely raw food diet to the children.
For skeptics, Taylor, Phillipe and kids stand out on the urban streets only for being enviably fit and attractive. No anemic, sandaled vegan cliches here; Taylor is powerful, petite with shiny blond hair and a gleaming smile; Phillipe has a square jaw and steely arms. They drive the kids to softball in a green mini-van, have roomfuls of plastic toys for all the kids, and wink at 13-year-old Madison’s occasional Starbucks frappuccino with friends. (more…)
A list of rules for nurses…from 1887
Whether you’re a new nurse or a seasoned nurse, it’s always intriguing to take a look back at the history of the nursing profession.
This list provided by carenurse.com illuminates the day-to-day tasks and regulations pertaining to the life of a nurse in 1887—before routine charting was even invented.

Nursing Students Share Top Reasons for Being a Nurse
Susan C. Slaninka, EdD, RN, is an adjunct professor of nursing, Villanova University, Villanova, PA.
Most nurses are juggling career, home and family responsibilities. One wonders why anyone would add graduate school to an already busy life. Classes, seminars, term papers and long clinical days fill the time that is left in their already-packed schedule.
About halfway through the semester of an online graduate class, I assign one “lighter” assignment to allow students to take a breath and relax. This year’s assignment was a Top 10 List.
In today’s world, so many of us hear nurses complain about how difficult and challenging our jobs have become and yet graduate students have obviously met that challenge and are seeking to continue in nursing. They clearly see something positive in what they do, so I asked them to identify the top 10 reasons they love being a nurse. Instead of giving you 40 top 10 lists, I have drawn from all of their entries and made a Top 40 list. I encourage you to take a minute and make your own top 10 list. (more…)
Yoga, Acupuncture and Alternative Therapies Complement Drug Rehab Treatment at the Camp Recovery Center
Scotts Valley, CA
The Camp Recovery Center’s medical director is opening up a new range of treatment options for men and women suffering from drug or alcohol addiction.
Amy Solomon, M.D., is a board certified family physician with more than 10 years of experience practicing medicine. In addition to serving as medical director at The Camp, she has her own integrative medical practice in Ben Lomond, Calif.
Since joining The Camp Recovery Center, Dr. Solomon has expanded the drug rehab program’s treatment offerings to include complementary and alternative therapies, herbal remedies and amino acid therapy. Included in treatment are two yoga sessions per week, twice weekly detox acupuncture groups, and individualized recommendations to replenish the body’s natural amino acids and nutrients.
“One of my goals is to bring addiction treatment at The Camp into a more integrative space,” said Dr. Solomon. “Building on the highly effective program already in place, clients can now choose from a full range of conventional and alternative therapies until they find what works for them.” (more…)
Rush Hour Gourmet

Food Network chef Tyler Florence never overlooks the little things in life.
In 2009, he whipped up Sprout, a successful organic baby food line (available at select Wegmans and Whole Foods), and just this month, he released a kid-focused cookbook, Start Fresh: Your Child’s Jump Start to Lifelong Healthy Eating (Rodale Books), geared toward parents who are busy but who actually have tastebuds.
We couldn’t resist this crowd-pleaser remake, nor the fact that you get a complete meal on one pan. (more…)
Coffee consumption generally safe in women with cardiovascular disease: Nurses study
By Reed Miller
Madrid, Spain – Previous studies on the influence of coffee consumption on cardiovascular disease have shown conflicting results, but a new analysis from the massive Nurses’ Health Study suggests that coffee has no effect on the cardiovascular risk of women with known cardiovascular disease [1].
“The results of this study support the idea that people with heart disease who drink coffee do not need to stop drinking it, because this beverage does not increase their risk of having a fatal event,” study lead author Dr Esther Lopez-Garcia (Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain) told heartwire. The study is published online May 13, 2011 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Lopez-Garcia and colleagues note that heavy coffee consumption was shown to increase the risk of sudden cardiac death in a population case-control study [2], but another study of all-cause mortality in patients hospitalized for acute MI found a strongly protective effect of heavy coffee consumption after three months but not at four years [3]. A three-year study found no association between the cumulative consumption of nonfiltered coffee and the risk of a second cardiovascular event [4], and a 10-year prospective study in Sweden found that filtered coffee consumption in the year prior to an acute MI appeared to reduce the risk of all-cause mortality after the event [5]. As reported by heartwire, a small study in Germany showed that drinking coffee improved markers of subclinical inflammation and oxidative stress, while increasing HDL-cholesterol levels. (more…)
Town’s Green Living Expo called a success
The Green Living Expo was a “big success with an estimated 125 attendees,” according to Supervisor Jim Dougherty. That number does not include presenters nor the dozen students washing cars in an eco-friendly way outside the fair, raising more than $700 for the senior fund. There was no cost to the vendors who provided information on green living to support clean water and a greener environment. Most of those who staffed the presenting tables were volunteers from non-profit groups, as well as town committee members or employees.
The event, first held last year, was town-sponsored and suggested by Jim Dougherty and Town Attorney Laurie Dowd through the Green Options Committee, which was established in 2008 at the request of Supervisor Jim Dougherty. The committee was created to support a range of environmentally sustainable practices and policy, leading by example, education, legislation and other appropriate measures. (more…)
Rooftop Greenhouse Offers Living Science Lesson for New York City Students
STAMFORD, Conn., June 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — The streets of New York City may be just as urban as ever, an unending view of steel and concrete, but for the 700 students of PS 333 on New York City’s Upper Westside, a trip to the farm is only a few stair flights away.
Located on the third floor roof of the Manhattan School for Children is an environmental farming Mecca. Rows and rows of organic kale, arugula, basil, broccoli, beets, cabbage and lettuce are growing and thriving in a state of the art environmentally sustainable greenhouse tended to each week by the hundreds of PS 333 students who are learning urban farming and environmental science in a one of a kind hands on classroom.
The greenhouse garden designed by Kiss+Cathcart Architects and New York Sun Works is the brainchild of The Greenhouse Project, a consortium of New York City public school parents concerned about elevating their children’s science education.
Unveiled in February 2011 with a “Lettuce-Cutting” ceremony for educators, parents and students, the unique classroom concept caught the attention of MXenergyTV producers who decided to feature the project on their “green-living” program, “Attainable Sustainables.” (more…)
Apples top 2011 ‘dirty dozen’ list, says group
Apples are the most chemically contaminated produce, says a new report by the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit focused on public health.
The report suggests buying organic apples instead of conventional, and names other fruits and vegetables that rank highest in pesticides. Organic produce is grown using materials of plant or animal origin, instead of chemicals. On the “dirty dozen” list are: (more…)
No one’s demanding nude harpists on 24 hours notice
By Heidi Wendel
No, you really don’t.
Sure doctors get to wear cool clothes – those long white coats they’ve worn since medieval times, and the sexy high tech scrubs underneath.
But let’s be honest – for most of us, cutting open live human flesh is gruesome. We’d rather draw things, write briefs, come up with punchlines, teach kids.
And that’s especially true of dentists and oral surgeons. Nobody daydreams about doing that stuff. It’s probably something that happens to you if you’ve just finished medical school and a position opens up as an oral surgery resident and they offer you more money than in the pediatric residency.
Three years later you wake up as an oral surgeon.
Gretchen, a 44-year-old, divorced, criminal defense lawyer, encountered such a surgeon recently with her brother Ethan when her mother had a pain in her jaw, probably caused by Gretchen and Ethan.

FDA has no guidelines for cosmetics
By Nedra Rhone
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Annette Rubin was pregnant with her first son when a scary thought entered her mind. If it wasn’t safe to color her hair during pregnancy, what about all the other products she put on her skin each day? She posed the question to her husband, Dr. Jason Rubin, a family practitioner, who admits he didn’t have a good answer.
“I said, the FDA [Food and Drug Administration] has jurisdiction over cosmetics, I’m sure they require something,” Rubin said. But they didn’t. The U.S. government does not regulate cosmetics or personal-care products at all. “The FDA standards on medication are amazing, but with cosmetics they take a different approach,” Rubin said.
So Rubin and his wife, a cosmetics industry veteran, launched Belli, a line of personal-care products for pregnant and nursing women (and babies) that avoids ingredients linked to birth defects. “It makes sense if an ingredient has a link to a birth defect, why not find another that doesn’t have a problem?” Rubin said.
The Washington-based brand, manufactured by Advanced Bio-Technologies in Suwanee, is just one example of a company seeking to help consumers make sense of the complicated issue of safety in personal-care products. (more…)
