Schools plagued by nursing shortage

By Sarah Campbell

scampbell@salisburypost.com

SALISBURY — During a recent afternoon at Millbridge Elementary, school nurse Sharon Beck held a blood glucose monitor steady while second-grader Kayla Woods pricked her own finger.

The two chatted until the device beeped, an indication the results were ready.

Kayla’s blood sugar was high, so Beck asked the type-1 diabetic a few questions.

“What did you have for lunch?”

“Did you eat all of your lunch?”

“Wasn’t your blood sugar low this morning?”

It turns out Kayla ate almost every bite of her burrito lunch that day.

After Kayla returned to class, Beck called her father to give him a heads up.

During the call, she asked when the 7-year-old’s next appointment with a doctor was and suggested checking to see if her diet needed to be adjusted.

But most days Beck isn’t around to help Kayla with her blood sugar checks, leaving the school’s administrative assistants to handle the task.

Each week, Beck travels between Landis Elementary School, Millbridge Elementary and Knox Middle.

And she’s not the only one. (more…)

Male nurses find hospice work rewarding

They say the profession demands a lot but that it also gives much in return.

By Sandy Whitesides

More men are choosing careers in the nursing profession these days, though they still are in the minority.

The field has become increasingly attractive to both genders in recent years because it offers abundant job opportunities and, according to the Nursing Online Education Database, the average salary of a nurse is now above the national average.

With the current conditions of the economy, it’s easy to understand why anyone would be interested in pursuing this field of study. But after talking to two male nurses in the Gaston County area, it became clear that job opportunities and salaries were only part of the equation. The dominant factor driving their career choice centered on their desire to help others.

Juano Duff, 54, of Gastonia and Gregg Talton, 43, of Belmont are the only male nurses at the Robin Johnson Hospice House in Dallas. The Robin Johnson House is a beautiful 12-bed inpatient facility for terminally ill patients.

“For those working here, this is more than a job,” said Teresa Reynolds, interim director. “It’s their mission.”

Duff and Talton agree, saying their work is part of their calling. Both men left other careers to attend nursing school.

Duff retired from the Air Force in 1996. He had been working in the aero-medical field at Wright- Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, providing medical care to Air Force families, and thought nursing would be the next logical step.

After graduating from nursing school, he worked as a traveling nurse, then moved with his wife and children to Gastonia because he had heard the area was a great place to raise a family. (more…)

Experts Explore Solutions to Nursing Shortage, Skills Gap

University of Phoenix Research Institute convenes nursing leaders to envision the next-generation nursing workforce

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the U.S. will need to add 580,000 nurses to the workforce by 2018. Moreover, these nurses will need higher skill levels than current nurses possess.

“Critical Conditions: Preparing the 21st-Century Nursing Workforce”

The Institute of Medicine recommends that 80% of registered nurses hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by 2020. Yet only half of nurses now have this credential. Experts say the nursing shortage and skills gap jeopardize our nation’s ability to provide care, especially for the aging population.

To explore these issues and possible solutions, on Tuesday, June 21, the University of Phoenix Research Institute sponsored the expert panel event, “Critical Conditions: Preparing the 21st-Century Nursing Workforce,” at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Hosted by The Chronicle of Higher Education, the event attracted academic and industry leaders with a wide range of expertise in nursing education, practice, and policy. Panelists included nursing school deans, healthcare executives, and technology experts. They addressed educational and policy strategies to advance a new generation of competent and compassionate nurses. (more…)

Nursing Students Share Top Reasons for Being a Nurse

Susan C. Slaninka, EdD, RN, is an adjunct professor of nursing, Villanova University, Villanova, PA.

Most nurses are juggling career, home and family responsibilities. One wonders why anyone would add graduate school to an already busy life. Classes, seminars, term papers and long clinical days fill the time that is left in their already-packed schedule.

About halfway through the semester of an online graduate class, I assign one “lighter” assignment to allow students to take a breath and relax. This year’s assignment was a Top 10 List.

In today’s world, so many of us hear nurses complain about how difficult and challenging our jobs have become and yet graduate students have obviously met that challenge and are seeking to continue in nursing. They clearly see something positive in what they do, so I asked them to identify the top 10 reasons they love being a nurse. Instead of giving you 40 top 10 lists, I have drawn from all of their entries and made a Top 40 list. I encourage you to take a minute and make your own top 10 list. (more…)

Yoga, Acupuncture and Alternative Therapies Complement Drug Rehab Treatment at the Camp Recovery Center

Scotts Valley, CA

The Camp Recovery Center’s medical director is opening up a new range of treatment options for men and women suffering from drug or alcohol addiction.

Amy Solomon, M.D., is a board certified family physician with more than 10 years of experience practicing medicine. In addition to serving as medical director at The Camp, she has her own integrative medical practice in Ben Lomond, Calif.

Since joining The Camp Recovery Center, Dr. Solomon has expanded the drug rehab program’s treatment offerings to include complementary and alternative therapies, herbal remedies and amino acid therapy. Included in treatment are two yoga sessions per week, twice weekly detox acupuncture groups, and individualized recommendations to replenish the body’s natural amino acids and nutrients.

“One of my goals is to bring addiction treatment at The Camp into a more integrative space,” said Dr. Solomon. “Building on the highly effective program already in place, clients can now choose from a full range of conventional and alternative therapies until they find what works for them.” (more…)

School Nurse

School nurses have to handle everything from acute problems like splinters and sprained ankles to chronic issues such as asthma and diabetes. They manage school physicals, deal with crisis counseling, keep track of immunizations and promote healthy lifestyle choices.

Communicating with Parents and Teachers. School nurses should consider contacting both parents and teachers via email with healthy reminders such as cold and flu prevention, proper hand washing techniques and advice for parents on keeping sick children at home. Encouraging feedback and regular communication helps keep everyone on the right track to health.

Natural Care for Injured or Ill Students. Although school budgets don’t always allow for organic and natural wellness products at schools, illness can be avoided with some very basic activities. Sheramy Vandernat, RN, BSN, offers these tips for nurses on how to keep kids healthy at school:

1. Encourage good hand hygiene

  • To give kids an idea of how long it should take to thoroughly wash their hands, teach them to sing Happy Birthday or their ABCs twice while scrubbing. (Incidentally, the same singing idea applies for teeth brushing, although it’s much harder to sing with a toothbrush in your mouth.)
  • Visit the CDC‘s website for the recommended hand washing technique.
  • Teach parents and students that bottled hand sanitizers are intended for use when soap and water are inaccessible, not as a replacement. Although hand sanitizers are convenient, kids should still wash their hands with soap and water at the first opportunity for a more effective job. Also, be sure to use natural soaps over antibacterial ones, which almost always contain the precarious chemical triclosan or triclocarban. Both of these chemicals have been found to be endocrine disruptors and wreak havoc on our waterways. (more…)

Coffee consumption generally safe in women with cardiovascular disease: Nurses study

By Reed Miller

Madrid, Spain – Previous studies on the influence of coffee consumption on cardiovascular disease have shown conflicting results, but a new analysis from the massive Nurses’ Health Study suggests that coffee has no effect on the cardiovascular risk of women with known cardiovascular disease [1].

“The results of this study support the idea that people with heart disease who drink coffee do not need to stop drinking it, because this beverage does not increase their risk of having a fatal event,” study lead author Dr Esther Lopez-Garcia (Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain) told heartwire. The study is published online May 13, 2011 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Lopez-Garcia and colleagues note that heavy coffee consumption was shown to increase the risk of sudden cardiac death in a population case-control study [2], but another study of all-cause mortality in patients hospitalized for acute MI found a strongly protective effect of heavy coffee consumption after three months but not at four years [3]. A three-year study found no association between the cumulative consumption of nonfiltered coffee and the risk of a second cardiovascular event [4], and a 10-year prospective study in Sweden found that filtered coffee consumption in the year prior to an acute MI appeared to reduce the risk of all-cause mortality after the event [5]. As reported by heartwire, a small study in Germany showed that drinking coffee improved markers of subclinical inflammation and oxidative stress, while increasing HDL-cholesterol levels. (more…)

Manure, farmer’s markets: solution for a growing world’s food needs?

by Hembree Brandon in Farm Press Blog

At the same Future of Food Conference where Britain’s Prince Charles advocated for organic agriculture, a U.S. senator inveighed against federal farm programs and genetically modified crops.

John Tester, D-Mont., who told the Georgetown University audience, “I speak to you as a farmer who has made his living off the land, lived my whole life with my hands in the dirt,” says farm programs have weakened agricultural diversity and made it harder for family farms to stay afloat.”

Tester, who with his wife grows grow organic wheat, barley, and other crops on a farm that has been in their family more than 100 years, says also that “the rise in GMOs and who controls seeds is particularly disturbing.” (more…)

Organic farming more popular in Ore., NW schools

By STEVE BROWN Capital Press

SALEM, Ore.—Organic studies haven’t traditionally been offered at land-grant universities, but these aren’t conventional ag students.

Aspiring farmers arriving on campus these days may come from big cities in addition to rural areas, and some are as interested in organic and small-scale agriculture as production farming.

“These kids come from the whole range,” said John Reganold of Washington State University. “Some have farmed for generations and want to learn organic, maybe shift part of the family operation to organic.”

Reganold, WSU regents professor of soil science and agroecology, advises students who major in organic agriculture. (more…)

New Line of Organic Dog Apparel and Accessories Integrates One-of-a-Kind Safety Technology

MONTREAL, May 24, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Montreal-based LuvGear has teamed up with PETCO to introduce a revolutionary new line of organic apparel and accessories for dogs designed to help protect them from the dangers of heat. Planet PETCO™ apparel with LuvGear Technology will be introduced for the first time on May 24, 2011 as part of the recently launched Planet PETCO line of earth-conscious lifestyle and care products that encourage sustainability. TempAlert is designed to warn pet parents when the external temperatures are reaching levels that may be harmful or even fatal to a dog.

Here’s how it works: The “alert” icons are sewn directly onto the clothing or material and serve as a visible warning sign when the temperature reaches a dangerous level for a dog to be outside. In normal conditions, the alert patch displays a dark blue/purple thermometer.  When the outside temperatures reach approximately 100 degrees (F), the blue/purple color in the thermometer disappears, revealing an “ALERT” which warns the owner to take the necessary steps to protect their pet from heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Yoga enthusiasts stretch for Boulder County foster care awareness

A handful of people gathered at the Boulder County Recycling Center on Saturday for several hours of yoga. The event served not only as a full day of exercise, but as a way of opening dialogue and creating awareness for the needs of the Boulder County foster care program.

“The cause and the event both fit well with our interests,” participant Janna Hansen said.

She came to do yoga with her friend, Carllee Curran, who is taking yoga classes at Naropa University.

“Yoga has so much inherent meaning,” said Moriah Arnold, one of the principal organizers of the event. “Today we’re practicing karma yoga, the yoga of selfless service. It parallels what they’re doing with the foster program.” (more…)
