A merry and modern Christmas

Environmentalism, digital world give traditions a tweak

Christmas is steeped in tradition, but that doesn’t mean the merry season can’t feel modern.
With the digital revolution, green sensibilities and ever-evolving styles of the 21st century, traditions take on a new vibe.
“We live in a different world,” says Gerald Smith, professor of religion and environmental studies at Sewanee: The University of the South. “We can sing ‘Over the river and through the woods’ all we want, but most of us live in a digital world; high-tech things are a part of our life, and what we are doing is pulling Christmas traditions in that direction.

A Minimalist’s Guide to Holiday Gifting

Written by Jill Ettinger

a minimalist can still find holiday gifts

You think tchotchke is a Russian novelist. You’ve never bought a souvenir, a bauble or a trinket. Clutter makes you hyperventilate. There’s something to be said for the Zen-like state of living without encumbering things all around us. Even studies have shown that a de-cluttered living environment can be more conducive to creativity, focus and happiness. But being anti-thing can make the holidays a little rough and confusing.

Whether getting a gift for a minimalist or you happen to be one yourself struggling with holiday gift ideas, perhaps some of these will work for you.

Hippie-ism started to fade like a bad tie-dye at the tail end of last century. Then we focused on making money quickly. It was cool to own stocks and bonds, to build empires in grey suits and to have stress-related heart attacks. Now hipsters, ancestors of the hippie, are everywhere. The Bohemian has woken up from a 30-year slumber. But this time, dreadlocks and mind-evolving drugs are not a prerequisite.

From the soccer mom to the socialite, we all carry a bit of the inner hippie and the world is a better place for it.

Patagonia: Don’t Buy Our Jackets

Patagonia: Don’t Buy Our Jackets

Patagonia (PDF)/Promo image

Not content with encouraging potential buyers to check out eBay for pre-loved products or resoling their shoes before purchasing new ones, outdoor clothier Patagonia recently took the audacious step of telling their customers simply to not to buy their jackets.

During the recent Black Friday, (America’s mad buying frenzy that somehow denotes an “official” start to Christmas shopping), Patagonia placed an advert in the New York Times, requesting of readers; “Don’t Buy This Jacket.”

We ask you to buy less and to reflect before you spend a dime on this jacket or anything else. [...] Don’t buy what you don’t need. [R]eimagine a world where we take only what nature can replace.

Green Tuesday – shop green & shop small this holiday season

Green Tuesday a twist on holiday name game

Consumers are encouraged to “shop green” and “shop small” during the holiday gift-giving season

BY SARAH SKIDMORE, The Associated Press

Shoppers who want to save green – and be greener – during the holiday season are the focus of a major new push by the nonprofit Green America to make the Tuesday after every Thanksgiving “Green Tuesday.”

To kick off this new annual holiday shopping tradition, Green America’s GreenDeals.org website  will be offering special deals for the week starting on the first “Green Tuesday” (November 29, 2011).

Much like Groupon does for general shoppers, GreenDeals.org offers discounts and deals from local and national green online businesses that are approved by Green America.  GreenDeals.org features a new deal or discount every 24-48 hours.

Give The Gift Of Good Health

Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, lists five toxic holiday gifts you should never buy a loved one for Christmas
Gift-giving is a wonderful activity, but many people who give gifts to family and friends don’t realize they’re actually giving the recipient cancer, or diabetes or attention deficit problems.
In this article, I expose five dangerous gifts that may literally increase the risk of disease and death. Whatever you give your family and friends this holiday season, please avoid giving these five dangerous gifts:
Dangerous gift #5) Clothing that’s full of GMOs, dyes and pesticides

Finally, all non-organic cotton isloaded with pesticides, and those pesticide chemicals can promote Parkinson’s disease, dementia and other brain disorders (http://www.naturalnews.com/027098_p…). The only cotton that’s free of pesticides is100% organic cotton, which is available from a few specialty stores and online retailers.

6 Thanksgiving-Worthy Organic Wines Under $25

Written by Jessica Reeder

Thanksgiving wine toast

Americans drink more wine on Thanksgiving than on any other day of the year. Maybe it’s because a couple of glasses take the edge off awkward family interactions, or maybe, as Andre Simon claimed, “wine makes every table more elegant.” But don’t be mistaken: You won’t need expensive bottles to create that elegance. In fact, Slate recently made a case for cheap vino – a mighty convincing one at that.

Unless you’re serving sommeliers and wine critics, you don’t need to go for broke. Let your delicious meal speak for itself, and pair it with these tasty organic wines that’ll enliven your table without killing your bank account.

Whites

Award-winning wine blogger Dr. Debs calls Snoqualmie Vineyards’ 2009 “Naked” Chardonnay“beautifully balanced” with clean mineral flavors and notes of apples and lemon peel. Unlike many Chardonnays, it’s fermented in stainless steel, not oak — and it’s an amazing bargain at $13 a bottle.

Domaine Eugene Meyer in Alsace has been making wine since the 1600s with organically-grown grapes. Their vegan-friendly Riesling is listed in the Organic Wine Company’s “Outstanding Wines” for this season. The winemaker describes it as having a “delicate fruitiness,” citrus nose and suggestion of elderflower. The 2010 is listed at $24; other vintages may be cheaper still.

Reds

Pinot Noir is the traditional choice for Thanksgiving, so I’m giving you two choices. The first isCooper Mountain Winery’s 2009 Pinot Noir “Reserve” ($24), an organic and biodynamic wine with dark fruit and spice flavors. Dr. Debs described the 2006 vintage as “cheerful,” “pure,” “intense” and “lively.” For an even more intense flavor, try Domaine Carneros’ “Avant Garde” Pinot Noir ($24), which boasts black cherry and cranberry flavors, spices, orange peel and oak. The catch: It’s only available at the winery in Napa.

For something just a smidge different, try Terlato & Chapoutier’s Shiraz-Viognier blend, an Australian-Californian mashup with a dark earthiness surrounding berry flavors. It consistently scores well in Wine Spectator, but you can get the 2008 for about $15.

Bubbly

When it comes to holiday bubbles, look no further than Domaine Carneros’ Brut Cuvee ($20-26), which has been called to as the best sparkling wine in America. Yes, it’s organic — and despite its low price, it may just be the definition of a California “champagne.”

Want more options? Try these holiday organic wine pairings or check out the organic wine finder app.

Waste Not: 8 Ways to Reduce Thanksgiving Day Waste

Mantrameds sustainable medical apparel encourages you to reduce, reuse & recycle on this Thanksgiving holiday! This great article from Organic Authority gives tips on reducing your waste before, during and after turkey day!

Written by Abbie Stutzer

thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is not about stuffing your face and unbuttoning your pants to allow your stomach that extra inch of space. Nor is it about wasting oodles of food, paper products and energy. Shocking, I know. The renowned holiday is really about being thankful for what you have, family and good food prepared with care — and consciousness.

It’s easy to overlook that last part. We’re all hurried and rushed, and spend most of our holiday prep time thinking about meal presentation rather than preparation and clean up. The following tips, ideas and general advice can help you stay conscious this Thanksgiving. Enjoy the day and take pleasure in knowing you did everything in your power to produce a sustainable meal!

Thanksgiving Day Preparation

Get it Done in One Trip

Make your list, check it twice, and have your mom look over it so she can remind you of that one item you will inevitably forget. Getting all of your holiday shopping done in one trip will save gas, wear and tear on your car and time.

Break Out the Good Dishes

Don’t use plastic utensils or paper plates, and cook with reusable containers and pans. Sure, dish washing is a chore, but these  “convenient” dishes create a ton of waste. Use cloth napkins, too. Also, post meal clean up can be done with a homemade, green cleaner and an old towel.

Recycling Garbage

Recycle every last plastic container, cardboard box and wine bottle.

Compost!

Put plant waste, coffee grounds and tea bags in your compost pile.

Decorate with Nature

Fill clear vases with pinecones, acorns and colorful leaves and use as an earthy centerpiece. Popped open your organic wine bottles already? Take the corks, carve a small slit in the cork, and place a piece of paper with a guest’s name to create unique, upcycled place settings.

The Meal

Use the Whole Turkey

That expensive free-range, organic turkey gave its life to feed you and your family and friends — you better use the whole thing. Kathy Bechtel of Italian Food, Wine, Health and Fitness has a great post dedicated to how to use the entire bird.

Use Organic and Local Veggies

A no-brainer, but easy to forget if you’re in a rush at the store. Try to buy fresh rather than canned. Use traditional Thanksgiving food (cranberries, yams) and make unconventional side dishes.

Meat-Free Meal Options

These awesome holiday recipes are vegetarian-friendly. Serve as this year’s Thanksgiving entree (the butternut squash gnocchi looks amazing — and it can be made vegan) if you and your family don’t eat meat, or serve as unique side dishes to complete your turkey.

Top 10 alternative eco-friendly Christmas gifts

Top 10 alternative eco-friendly Christmas gifts
*Remember Mantrameds eco-friendly medical scrubs for that green nurse in your life! We do online gift cards! Email us at info@mantrameds.com
green-gift
Christmas is nearly upon us and as Andy Williams once crooned, it’s the most wonderful times of the year. As Santa begins to wrap his icy fingers around the winter season, we are reminded that ‘tis the season of warm drinks by the fireplace and jolly songs ringing through the snow-dusted streets. It is also a time of infuriating queues and last minute dashes to the shops to find loved ones the perfect presents.
However, even in gift giving, it’s important to keep the environment in mind. You can help cut down on the level of toxicity that’s developed around commercial Christmas and maybe even influence good habits in those you love by following Retail Digital’s alternative green gift list.
1. Donate
A popular alternative to asking for a gift is to ask would-be gift-givers to donate to a charity or a philanthropic organisation in your name. This gift is both immaterial, and thereby doesn’t generate waste through packaging, but can also contribute to worthy causes and help organisations work to achieve goals, which is especially hard to do in this economic climate.
2. Tickets
A friend of mine once said that when it came to gift-giving, she preferred experiences to physical items. Giving the gift of tickets to a sports game, concert, play, or opera, is giving the gift of a memorable experience to someone, which many times can be more thoughtful than a mere trinket. It can also help people get out and try something new, or take part in something they enjoy but could not afford normally. Things like a year-long membership to a museum or a staging of Wagner’s Ring Cycle could make someone’s year without having to leave boxes of gift-aftermath out on the curb. Log on to lastminute.com to find great offers on some very unique experiences.
3. Space heater
For those who live in large homes, particularly older ones, and chew their nails when the heating bill arrives, space heaters are a great gift. Using a space heater on cool days in the area that you’re in is more energy efficient than blowing out the whole house with the heavy artillery central heating. A practical and efficient gift for all your friends living in haunted houses.
4.  Super vacuum
Not many people think of vacuums as “green” products, but a high efficiency, low energy vacuum can use less energy in the home, and amass dust and dirt into small compact units that can then be disposed of effectively. Dyson is one brand that is advancing green cleaning technology with vacuums that aren’t unnecessarily bulky, saving on materials.  Instead of bags, its vacuums utilise what the company calls “Root Cyclone” technology, which essentially means that you get a more efficient, high-powered vacuum that will leave you with a cleaner house without having to throw away bags filled with cat hair and dust.
5. Bulk canisters
Shopping in bulk is proven to be cheaper overall than buying individual packages, which create waste, but often we forego buying in bulk because we don’t have the place to store tons of stuff. Resolve this by gifting a set of high-quality storage jars for the kitchen. Having spice containers and canisters to house bulk groceries encourages the purchase of those bulk materials.
6. Subscription to streaming service
A subscription to Netflix Streaming or any other online web-streaming service is a gift that creates virtually no waste and has lasting impacts. Many families are set up with some device that allows them to stream movies and TV shows to their television, computer, video game console, or set-top-box. If Netflix is not an option for whatever reason, there are many alternatives to choose from including Amazon Video and Hulu.
7. Bicycles
When it comes to decreasing carbon footprints, transportation plays an important role. We can’t all afford to gift an electric car, but bicycles are a cheap alternative and have health and fitness benefits, to boot. Substituting one car ride with a bike ride each week would substantially reduce emissions flowing into the atmosphere and help keep your body in reasonable health.
8. Compost tumbler
In 2009, the United States produced 243 tons of rubbish, and 21 tons of that was recovered by composting. If you know someone who is conscious of waste generated in the kitchen, but doesn’t know what to do about it, a composting tumbler is a great idea. Composting is a great way to reduce kitchen waste and repurpose for a small home garden. Fruits, vegetables, herbs and other crops from that garden can be used in the kitchen which saves on the costs of groceries. Save the world, eat healthier, spend less money? Count us in!
9. Electric lawnmowers
Spring may seem far away at the end of December, but if you live in an area where people have lawns an electric lawnmower is one of the greenest gifts that you can buy for them.  It may be that gas-engined mowers are easier to use, but they can be so noisy—noisy enough to cause hearing damage (your average lawnmower tops out at around 100 decibels, whereas hearing damage begins to happen around 90 decibels).  But aside from noise pollution, did you realise that lawnmowers are worse for the atmosphere than driving your car?  They can be surprisingly big polluters.
The EPA estimates that 10-12 percent of the nation’s total air pollution comes from the sort of small engines that you find in lawn care equipment.  Gas powered lawn mowers consume 580 million gallons of gasoline annually, and 25 percent to 35 percent of that fuel escapes unburned into the atmosphere – polluting the air we breathe and the water we drink.
Today we’ve got a different option in the electric lawn mower. Electric mowers are 50 percent to 75 percent quieter than a standard gas mower, self-propelled, can be easily adjusted to the desired cutting height, and are much less harmful to the environment.
10. Regift
You have heard it before: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.  Regift would complete the series.  Why buy another product from the store when you have got one at home that you’re not using?  There are all sorts of outdated ideas about the incivility of giving someone a gift that you’ve already ‘contaminated’ by using. In the new world, we have to think smaller and we have to think smarter: why cause further stress on the environment by supplying demand for a product that’s already wasting away in your attic or your garage!  It’s Christmas!  Give it away!

Car seats from Recycled Plastic Bottles on New Ford Focus Electric

The new Ford Focus electric car uses Repreve recycled polyester by Unifi – this is the same polyester Mantrameds uses in our 65/35 poly/cotton blend sustainable fabric for our scrubs.

By Cameron Chai

It takes plastic bottles and other industrial wastes to make the recycled polyester fibre Repreve, which in turn is used as the fabric for car seats in the all new Ford Focus Electric car. Repreve is manufactured by Unifi, one of the world’s leading environmentally sustainable fabric manufacturers.

ford uses recycled plastic bottles for the seats in the new ford Focus Electric

The Ford Focus Electric is made of sustainable materials intended to cut down on waste. Thus using the Repreve was a natural choice of recycled material. According to Unifi, a single Ford Focus Electric car uses 22 plastic water bottles of 16 Oz capacity for its car seats. The car is electrically powered and has zero carbon emissions, which is very much in line with the environmentally green concept.

As part of its 2009 mandate to its fabric suppliers to use 25% recycled content in their products, 37 fabrics, which have met Ford’s requirements have been incorporated. This is part of Ford’s “Reduce, reuse and recycle” environmentally sustainable global strategy. Repreve reduces the energy consumed in refining virgin material from crude oil. The company recently announced that it uses plastic bottles weighing 20-25 Oz for the carpeting in its new Ford Escape utility vehicle. This is the first time the company has used such carpeting for an SUV. Ford has previously used various non-metal materials that have been recycled for specific applications. Some examples of such usage are seat covers made of recycled yarn, wheat straw-filled plastics, head restraints and seat cushions made of soy foam, instrument panels consisting of castor oil foam and underbody systems made of recycled resins.

What goes into Mantrameds Scrubs?

Mantrameds’ South Carolina office moved early Fall to W. Antrum Drive in Greenville. We have a great display room that has remained sparse until today. Pictured below are some of the materials that go into Mantrameds scrubs.

MMdisplaytable

To the right are miniature hay bales. The two brown ones are Texas Organic Cotton, which accounts for 50% of our poly/cotton blend. The orange hay bale with tiger paws is one of Jack Miller’s favorite souvenirs. He bought it at a fundraiser for the agriculture department at his alma matter – Clemson University. To learn more about Texas organic cotton, go to http://www.texasorganic.com/

The plastic pyramid in the center of the table is made of display canisters from Repreve Recycled Polyester, which makes up 50% of Mantrameds fabric. These canisters show the 3 stages of the recycled polyester process. The plastic is melted down and chopped into small beads. These are melted down into flakes, which are then extracted into polyester yarn. To read more about Repreve Recycled Polyester, go to http://www.repreve.com/

The left side of the table displays Mantrameds’ newest literature. As of last week, we have an updated catalog, story-teller hangtags, discount cards, and star-shaped badge pulls. To request a new catalog or inquire about Mantrameds scrubs, email us at info@mantrameds.com

Fast fashion might have been good for our wallets and our wardrobes, but it didn’t do anything else much good. Cheap high-street chains democratised the way we wore clothes.

They realigned the trend cycle. But we reached the zenith of the use-once-and-destroy mindset shortly before the economic collapse rewired our brains and stopped us shelling out.

These days, as well as keeping an eye on wearability and investment potential, shoppers have developed something of a guilt complex – it isn’t so much a consumer culture any more as a consumer conscience.

Enter Swedish high-street giant H&M and its new sustainable collection, which aims to allay some of those fears by creating affordable clothing in a more ethical way. Since the launch of H&M’s first Conscious collection at Selfridges last April, the store has seen significant interest in the clothes and the story behind their production; many of the pieces sold out on the first day that they were available. This week sees the release of the Conscious Party capsule, a line of festive looks and statement pieces with the underlying message that “a dress is for life, not just for Christmas”.

“For us, it’s important that when they come to a store, whatever a customer chooses – if it’s a Conscious item or not – they should feel that it’s produced in a responsible way,” says Helena Helmersson, H&M’s head of corporate and social responsibility. “We work hard and we’re at the forefront of sustainability. But with these collections, we want to highlight it even more – these materials are extra sustainable!” She laughs and waves her arms around.

“Organic cotton, recycled polyester, tencel – which is more silk-like material made from old wooden fibres,” she clarifies. “Sometimes weuse recycled linen, recycled wool, and organic hemp.”

At H&M’s headquarters in Stockholm, there is an entire department devoted to coming up with new materials and creative solutions to address the ethical dichotomy surrounding what is at the brand’s heart: to provide customers with affordable but responsible clothing. There have been eco-offerings in the past, such as last year’s sell-out “Garden” collection, and a “Waste” collection that re-used remaindered materials from the highly acclaimed collaboration with French fashion house Lanvin. Pilot schemes have started too in branches of H&M in the Netherlands, where customers can bring in their old clothes and leave them to be recycled. It’s a pragmatic way of addressing a problem that won’t go away.

“The most common fibre is cotton,” Helmersson continues, “and we have the goal that by 2020, all of our cotton should come from sustainable sources: recycled, organic and ‘better’ cotton.”

The “better” option is a programme backed by governments and NGOs to educate farmers (so far, H&M has supported 68,000 of them) in using fewer pesticides and less water while growing their cotton. “The criteria for organic cotton are that no chemicals and no pesticides are used,” she explains. “It takes a few years for the farmer to convert and they lose a lot of money. We’re now the biggest buyer of organic cotton in the world and that’s something we are very proud of, but what’s so great with this initiative is that the incentives are there now, compared to organic cotton, where the incentives are four years away.”

On a previous visit to Stockholm, the company’s trend co-ordinator, Catarina Midby, told me about H&M’s first ethical collection. “In 1993, we did an ethical organic cotton collection called ‘Nature Calling’. But the fashion level was not right – it was more about sustainability than fashion… and nobody bought it.” As if pre-empting shoppers’ reactions to eco-fashion (which is often seen as inferior taste-wise, with an emphasis on substance over style – heaven forbid!), H&M does not now flag up the fact that it blends organic cotton into most of the pieces it sells.

The Conscious Party collection, however, strikes the perfect balance between style and sustainability, offering up some of the season’s most popular pieces in a range of materials. There are kimono blouses, high-waisted trousers, folksy dresses and dinner jackets, all accented in red, and Gothic bustier dresses provide a pretty body-con aspect. Supermodel Karen Elson fronts the campaign alongside her sister, Kate, both sporting recycled polyester numbers – a fibre which is made from melting down plastic PET bottles – which come in at under £40.

“We don’t want customers to have to pay extra,” Helena Helmersson says. “We invest in the customer first and we’re proud to make clothes of more sustainable materials available to a lot of people. We want to reach people with this message and we’ll stick to the same prices.”
